Union Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, Shri Manohar Lal, launched Convergence Energy Services Limited’s (CESL) “EV as a Service” programme at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium. CESL is a subsidiary of Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL). The programme marks a significant push towards increasing the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) within the Central and State Government ministries, departments, CPSEs, and institutions.
The goal of CESL’s initiative is to deploy 5,000 electric cars over the next two years to meet the growing demand for EVs in the government sector. The programme offers a flexible procurement model that enables government offices to choose from various EV makes and models, aligning with their operational needs. This will support the government’s environmental sustainability goals and contribute to India’s ambitious target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.
CESL has already made notable progress, with nearly 2,000 electric cars deployed across the country and approximately 17,000 electric buses in the pipeline. The initiative is expected to reduce carbon emissions, decrease reliance on fossil fuels, and strengthen India’s energy security. Shri Manohar Lal praised CESL’s efforts, highlighting that the programme embodies sustainable innovation and will help drive India’s transition to cleaner mobility solutions.
Shri Vishal Kapoor, MD & CEO of CESL, emphasized that the launch of this programme follows the introduction of the PM E-DRIVE Scheme, which aims to accelerate India’s shift towards electric mobility. He added that CESL is committed to facilitating large-scale EV adoption within government fleets, helping reduce emissions, and boosting energy security. Kapoor also mentioned that the programme aims to create a collaborative ecosystem that includes manufacturers, fleet operators, policymakers, and users, driving the growth of sustainable mobility in India.
The launch event featured an impressive exhibition of electric vehicles and an EV rally with over 100 electric vehicles, showcasing a wide range of e-mobility solutions. These included e-bicycles, electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, four-wheelers, e-tractors, e-mobile charging vans, e-cargo pickups, e-buses, and e-trucks. The event was attended by officials from various ministries, including the Ministry of Power, Ministry of Heavy Industries, Department of Revenue, and Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs, alongside EV manufacturers, think tanks, and enthusiasts.
Through this programme, CESL is paving the way for a greener and more sustainable future in India’s transportation sector.
