Volkswagen has announced plans to introduce an all-new sub-4-metre compact SUV in the Indian market in 2027, targeting the country’s largest passenger vehicle segment.
The upcoming SUV will be built on Volkswagen’s MQB-A0-IN platform, which was developed specifically for the Indian market. It will become the automaker’s most accessible model in India and is expected to expand its presence in the high-volume compact SUV segment.
The vehicle will be developed and manufactured in India with a high degree of localisation. Volkswagen said the model will be tailored to Indian market requirements, with a focus on German engineering, safety, build quality and low cost of ownership.
The MQB-A0-IN platform, co-developed by engineering teams in India and Europe, supports the integration of efficient powertrains, advanced technology and safety systems designed to meet Indian emission and safety standards.
Thomas Schäfer, CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Cars and Member of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG, said the new SUV marks an important step in the company’s India strategy and is being developed specifically for the Indian market.
Piyush Arora, Managing Director and CEO of Škoda Auto Volkswagen India, said the model would be developed and produced in India, while strengthening the company’s supplier network and manufacturing ecosystem.
Nitin Kohli, Brand Director, Volkswagen India, said the new compact SUV is intended to bring Volkswagen’s focus on performance, safety and build quality to a broader customer base in India.
The company said the new model will also contribute to its broader strategy of positioning India as a development and production hub. High localisation is expected to support efficient production and strengthen Volkswagen’s presence in the country’s growing compact SUV market.
