The Odisha government has provided a total subsidy of Rs 154.27 crore to electric vehicle (EV) owners since the 2022-23 fiscal year, according to Transport Minister Bibhuti Bhusan Jena. In a written statement to the assembly, Jena noted that EV sales in Odisha have been rising since the state began offering subsidies on September 1, 2021.
Jena reported that Rs 8.83 crore in subsidies was distributed in 2022-23, which increased significantly to Rs 57.21 crore in 2023-24.
The government provided subsidies for 14,182 EVs registered in 2022-23, which surged to 36,518 in 2023-24. By August 2024, subsidies had already been given for 38,766 EVs registered in the current fiscal year.
Jena added that the state provides a maximum subsidy of Rs 20,000 for two-wheelers (Rs 5,000 per kilowatt hour) and Rs 30,000 for electric three-wheelers.
