Tata Motors, a pioneering name in the automotive industry, has taken another significant step towards environmental sustainability by partnering with Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), a renowned player in the renewable energy sector and a subsidiary of Tata Power. The collaboration involves a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) to establish a new 12 MWp on-site solar project at Tata Motors’ commercial vehicle manufacturing facility in Pune.
This initiative aligns with the broader vision of the Tata Group to promote eco-friendly manufacturing practices. The solar project, expected to be commissioned within six months of signing the PPA, is poised to make a substantial impact on Tata Motors’ sustainability goals. Once operational, it is estimated to generate approximately 17.5 million units of electricity annually, catering to nearly 17.2% of the facility’s annualized energy requirements. Moreover, this environmentally conscious endeavor is projected to reduce carbon emissions by over 12,400 tonnes per year.
Incorporating rooftop installations, this 12 MWp project complements the existing 8.73 MWp solar capacity at Tata Motors’ Commercial Vehicle Business Unit (CVBU) in Pune, bringing the total solar capacity at the site to 20.73 MWp. Over the coming years, Tata Motors intends to further expand its solar capacity in Pune to meet the rising demand for renewable energy.
Mr. Vishal Badshah, Vice President, Commercial Vehicle Operations at Tata Motors, expressed the company’s commitment to sustainability, with a goal of achieving net-zero emissions. He emphasized the strategic focus on increasing the use of renewable energy through on-site and off-site measures to decarbonize manufacturing operations. This partnership with Tata Power underscores Tata Motors’ dedication to greener and more efficient practices as it continues its journey as a “Future Ready” company and a signatory of RE100, actively transitioning to renewable energy sources.
Mr. Ashish Khanna, CEO of Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited, highlighted the significance of this collaboration, emphasizing the shared commitment of Tata Power Renewables and Tata Motors to a sustainable future. He reiterated Tata Power’s dedication to supporting the energy transition of its Commercial and Industrial (C&I) consumers through an array of clean energy solutions.
Notably, this isn’t the first collaboration between Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited and Tata Motors. The two companies have previously partnered to develop a 16 MWp solar power project in Pantnagar, Uttarakhand, set to become the largest in the state in terms of capacity. Tata Power is India’s Largest Integrated Power Company, with a presence across the entire power value chain, including conventional and renewable energy, power services, and next-generation customer solutions such as solar rooftop installations and electric vehicle charging stations.
