The Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) is planning to create a special entity, known as a special purpose vehicle (SPV), to implement an electric public transport project.
The proposal for 200 electric buses has already been submitted to Convergence Energy Services Ltd (CESL) under the National Electricity Buses Programme (NEBP), managed by CESL.
To support this initiative, VMC aims to develop the city as an electric hub with the assistance of the World Resources Institute, India. The SPV will be modelled after the one formed in Surat for the BRTS project and will be registered as a company.
The VMC commissioner will chair the SPV, and the deputy municipal commissioner (administration) will serve as the MD and CEO. Other key members will include the VMC standing committee chairman, the VUDA chief executive authority, the regional transport officer, the deputy commissioner of police (traffic), and the VMC city engineer.
The proposal for SPV formation is currently under consideration by the civic body’s standing committee, awaiting final approval from the general board.
