Volvo Buses has outlined significant progress in its efforts to decarbonize its global supply chain, reinforcing its ambition to achieve net-zero emissions across the value chain by 2040.

The company announced that sustainability considerations are now increasingly embedded into purchasing decisions, supplier partnerships, and operational processes as part of a structured, data-driven decarbonization strategy.

The initiative stems from broader sustainability commitments established across the Volvo Group and aligned with Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) standards. Volvo Buses has built its roadmap around three key pillars: climate, resources, and people, with reducing greenhouse gas emissions emerging as a central focus.

Initially, the company concentrated on building sustainability awareness through training programs covering circularity, human rights, and responsible material use. This foundation has since evolved into a stronger accountability framework, with suppliers being encouraged to measure and report their environmental performance.

A major milestone came in 2025 when Volvo Buses dedicated its annual supplier sustainability summit entirely to supply chain decarbonization. The company showcased its own environmental initiatives, including landfill-free facilities and sites powered by 100% renewable energy, while urging suppliers to develop carbon reduction strategies and product footprint assessments.

As part of a pilot program, selected suppliers were asked to disclose emissions targets, reduction plans, and product carbon footprints. The results revealed varying levels of readiness across the supplier network, ranging from companies at the early stages of sustainability planning to organizations already implementing sophisticated, data-driven decarbonization programs.

Recognizing that data collection remains a significant challenge for many suppliers, Volvo Buses has expanded support efforts by providing guidance, tools, and training resources aligned with international greenhouse gas accounting standards. The company’s purchasing, sustainability, and technical teams have collaborated to create practical frameworks that help suppliers identify emissions hotspots and develop long-term reduction roadmaps.

Volvo Buses emphasized that decarbonization can deliver both environmental and business benefits. Measures such as reusable packaging, electrification of equipment, and investments in renewable energy can lower operating costs while reducing carbon emissions.

The company believes these initiatives can improve efficiency, strengthen competitiveness, and help suppliers adapt to evolving sustainability expectations across the transportation industry.

With pressure mounting on industries worldwide to reduce emissions, Volvo Buses is encouraging suppliers to begin their decarbonization journeys immediately, even with incremental steps.

By fostering collaboration throughout its supply network, the company aims to accelerate progress toward its 2040 net-zero target while contributing to a more sustainable future for the commercial transportation sector.
