OMV Petrom has completed an EU-supported electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure project, installing 384 ultra-fast charging points across Romania, Hungary, and Slovakia along the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) corridor.
The project strengthens the transport corridor connecting Bratislava, Budapest, Oradea, and Cluj-Napoca, supporting cross-border electric mobility and advancing the European Union’s objective of expanding interoperable alternative fuel infrastructure.
According to the company, the project involved a total investment of approximately EUR 40 million, including up to EUR 12 million in funding from the European Union’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) allocated for Romania.
As part of the initiative, 304 charging points were installed across 74 locations in Romania, 28 charging points across seven locations in Hungary, and 52 charging points at 11 locations in Slovakia. The charging network also extends to cities including Timișoara, Tulcea, Constanța, Giurgiu, Focșani, Bacău, and Suceava, improving access to public charging infrastructure across the region.
OMV Petrom said the latest deployment significantly expands its regional charging network, which has grown from approximately 120 charging points in 2022 to around 1,500 charging points today. The company added that the expansion strengthens its position as Romania’s leading mobility provider while making long-distance electric vehicle travel more accessible.
Commenting on the development, Radu Căprău, Member of the OMV Petrom Executive Board responsible for Refining and Marketing, said the project enhances a key European transport corridor and supports the broader adoption of electric vehicles. He noted that public funding continues to play an important role in accelerating EV charging infrastructure deployment while the electric vehicle market continues to mature.
The project was implemented by a consortium led by OMV Petrom Marketing S.R.L., together with OMV Hungária KFT and OMV Slovensko s.r.o., in partnership with the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA). It contributes to the European Union’s efforts to develop an interoperable charging network that facilitates cross-border travel and supports the decarbonization of the transport sector.
