Volvo Trucks has commenced production of its all-new Volvo VNR regional haul truck at its New River Valley manufacturing plant in Virginia, marking a major milestone in the company’s North American operations. The new model is designed specifically for urban and regional delivery operations, where maneuverability, visibility, and safety are critical.

Built on a completely new platform that is around 90 percent new compared to the previous generation, the Volvo VNR has been engineered to navigate congested city streets, distribution centers, and dense urban environments. The truck was first unveiled in March 2025, with order books opening later that year, and the first production units have now rolled off the assembly line.

Volvo said the VNR offers up to a 7.5 percent improvement in fuel efficiency over the legacy model, driven by improved aerodynamics, advanced powertrain technology, and idle-shutdown systems. The truck also features enhanced forward visibility with a sloped hood and a large panoramic windshield, improving driver awareness and safety.

Safety is a key focus of the new VNR, which includes a comprehensive Volvo safety package and industry-first innovations such as integrated side curtain airbags, making it one of the safest regional trucks produced by Volvo Trucks North America. These technologies are designed to support operations in pedestrian-heavy urban environments and reduce risks for drivers and road users.

The new Volvo VNR is manufactured at Volvo’s New River Valley Plant, the company’s largest production facility globally. Volvo recently invested $400 million in major upgrades at the plant, including a new cab welding facility and enhanced paint and material flow systems, reinforcing its long-term commitment to U.S. manufacturing and workforce development.

The launch of the VNR follows the introduction of Volvo’s new long-haul VNL, reflecting the company’s strategy to develop application-specific trucks that improve efficiency, safety, and uptime for fleet operators across different transport segments.

Volvo Trucks said it continues to focus on quality, safety, and environmental care, supplying medium- and heavy-duty trucks through a global network of dealers and service points across more than 130 countries.
