Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) has achieved a major milestone in sustainable logistics by dispatching over 5.85 lakh vehicles via railways in calendar year 2025, marking an 18% increase over 2024. The company said the initiative helped avoid 87,904 metric tonnes of CO₂-equivalent emissions and saved around 68.7 million litres of fuel, reinforcing its commitment to environmentally responsible operations.

The share of rail transportation in Maruti Suzuki’s outbound logistics has grown significantly over the past decade, rising from 5.1% in 2016 to approximately 26% in 2025. Rail-based vehicle dispatch volumes have also surged more than 7.5 times, from nearly 77,000 units in 2016 to over 5.85 lakh units in 2025.

Speaking on the achievement, Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director and CEO of Maruti Suzuki India Limited, highlighted the company’s efforts to strengthen green logistics. He noted that 2025 witnessed two landmark developments: the inauguration of India’s largest automobile in-plant railway siding at the Manesar facility and the dispatch of vehicles to the Kashmir Valley via the world’s highest railway arch bridge over the Chenab River, a first for any automobile manufacturer.

Takeuchi added that Maruti Suzuki aims to increase the share of rail-based dispatches to 35% by FY 2030–31, contributing to India’s net-zero target by 2070. The company has also adopted a “Circular Mobility” sustainability approach, focusing on reducing carbon emissions across the entire vehicle lifecycle—from design and manufacturing to logistics and end-of-life vehicle management.

Maruti Suzuki has been a pioneer in rail-based vehicle transportation, becoming the first automaker to obtain an Automobile-Freight-Train-Operator (AFTO) license in 2013. Since FY 2014–15, the company has transported over 28 lakh vehicles to more than 600 cities using a hub-and-spoke logistics model. Currently, it operates over 45 flexi-deck rakes, each capable of carrying around 260 vehicles per trip.

In 2025, dispatches from in-plant railway sidings at Gujarat and Manesar accounted for 53% of Maruti Suzuki’s total rail dispatch volume, highlighting the growing importance of integrated rail infrastructure in the company’s logistics strategy.

Maruti Suzuki said it follows the Global Logistics Emissions Council (GLEC) framework V3.1 to calculate and report logistics-related emissions, ensuring transparency and global benchmarking in sustainability reporting.
