Hyundai has reinforced its leadership in the battery electric vehicle (BEV) segment with the IONIQ 6, which secured second place overall and first in the “premium class” category in the P3 Charging Index 2024. This recognition highlights Hyundai’s commitment to cutting-edge EV technology and energy efficiency, solidifying the IONIQ 6 as a frontrunner in electric mobility.
Exceptional Charging Performance and Efficiency
Powered by an 800V architecture, the Hyundai IONIQ 6 (tested in the RWD Long Range version) demonstrated ultrafast charging capabilities, recharging enough energy for an impressive 346 km range in just 20 minutes. In the P3 Charging Index tests, it also excelled in energy efficiency, consuming only 15.5 kWh per 100 km in the ADAC Ecotest, making it the most efficient vehicle among all models evaluated.
Thanks to its aerodynamically optimized design with a drag coefficient of just 0.21, the IONIQ 6 maximizes energy efficiency while maintaining high performance. The vehicle reached a peak charging power of over 235 kW and an average charging rate of 193 kW, ensuring optimal performance over an extended state-of-charge (SoC) range.
Understanding the P3 Charging Index
The P3 Charging Index (P3CI), developed by the P3 Group in 2019, serves as a benchmark for assessing EV charging performance. The index evaluates how many kilometers of real-world range can be recharged within 10- and 20-minute intervals at a fast-charging station, incorporating vehicle consumption data and charging curves.
For 2024, P3 analyzed 22 all-electric models across “premium” and “luxury” categories, including Chinese EVs newly introduced to the European market. The ideal P3CI value is 1.0, which corresponds to an actual range of 300 km being recharged in 20 minutes. With a P3CI value above 1.0, the IONIQ 6 surpassed this benchmark, further emphasizing its superior charging capabilities.
Innovative E-GMP Platform and Advanced Features
Built on Hyundai Motor Group’s Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), the IONIQ 6 delivers top-tier performance with a choice of two battery sizes (53.3 kWh or 77.4 kWh) and both rear- and all-wheel drive options. The vehicle offers ultra-fast charging, reaching 80% charge in just 18 minutes, and integrates Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) technology, allowing users to power external devices directly from the car.
Designed with sustainability in mind, the IONIQ 6 incorporates eco-friendly materials in both its interior and exterior, reflecting Hyundai’s commitment to environmental responsibility. Its futuristic “streamliner” design, inspired by the aerodynamics of the 1930s, aligns aesthetics with efficiency, making it an ideal choice for both daily commutes and long-distance travel.
A Benchmark for the Future of EVs
The IONIQ 6’s outstanding performance in the P3 Charging Index 2024 reaffirms Hyundai’s technological leadership in the electric vehicle sector. By combining ultra-fast charging, high energy efficiency, and cutting-edge design, Hyundai continues to push the boundaries of electric mobility, setting new standards for the industry.
