The South African Electric Mobility Association has officially commenced operations to represent the country’s expanding electric vehicle (EV) sector and support the transition towards sustainable transportation. The establishment of the association creates a unified platform for industry stakeholders to engage with policymakers, address sector challenges, and promote the development of electric mobility across South Africa.

During its official launch, the association signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Norwegian Electric Vehicle Association, one of the world’s largest membership organizations dedicated to electric mobility. The partnership is expected to strengthen cooperation between the two countries and provide South African stakeholders with access to international expertise, industry knowledge, and best practices from Norway’s advanced EV market.

The agreement was signed by Markus Rotevatn, representing the Norwegian organization’s international projects, and Hiten Parmar, co-founder of the South African Electric Mobility Association. Through this collaboration, the new association aims to learn from Norway’s experience in developing supportive regulatory frameworks, designing effective policies, and expanding electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

Norway is widely recognized as a global leader in electric mobility, with battery-electric vehicles accounting for nearly all new passenger car sales in the country. Its experience in accelerating EV adoption and developing supporting infrastructure is expected to provide valuable insights as South Africa works to strengthen its domestic electric mobility ecosystem.

The South African Electric Mobility Association will represent stakeholders across the entire clean transportation value chain. Its scope includes individual motorists, vehicle dealerships, charging station operators, infrastructure developers, technology investors, and other businesses supporting the electric mobility industry.

The association intends to serve as a common platform for these participants, enabling them to communicate industry requirements and contribute to the development of policies that support sustainable transportation. It will engage with government departments, policymakers, and regulatory authorities to advocate for appropriate reforms, safety standards, and guidelines to facilitate the wider adoption of electric vehicles.

The leadership believes that collaboration with an established international organization will help build a stronger domestic EV industry. By connecting commercial stakeholders with government institutions, the association aims to ensure that industry concerns and opportunities receive greater attention in policy discussions.
