Vietnamese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer VinFast has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Durango Drivers’ Union in Mexico to spearhead the green transition in public transportation. The agreement includes the potential purchase of 3,000 VF 5 electric cars and 300 electric buses, which will replace the city’s gasoline-powered fleet.
This collaboration highlights the increasing global demand for VinFast’s EV solutions and marks a significant step toward sustainable urban mobility in Mexico.
Under the agreement, VinFast will work with the Union of Drivers and Related Workers of Durango, a member of the Confederation of Mexico Workers (CTM), to negotiate the sale of its EVs. Additionally, VinFast’s affiliate, V-Green, will join CTM in developing and operating charging infrastructure throughout Durango City, creating a robust network to serve both private and public transport users.
By replacing gasoline-powered vehicles with EVs, the initiative aims to significantly reduce CO2 emissions, lower operating costs for drivers, and generate employment opportunities through the development of charging infrastructure.
Ms. Pham Thuy Linh, Deputy CEO of VinFast, emphasized the importance of the partnership, stating, “We are impressed by the State of Durango and CTM’s commitment to a green transition. With our cutting-edge electric vehicles and expertise in EV ecosystems, we are confident in supporting Durango’s vision for a sustainable future.”
Echoing this sentiment, Mr. Juan Erik Mercado Rangel, representing CTM leadership, expressed excitement about the partnership, adding, “VinFast’s innovative EVs and their vision for green mobility position us at the forefront of the global push for sustainable transportation.”
VinFast, a subsidiary of Vietnam’s Vingroup, offers a wide range of electric vehicles, from compact SUVs like the VF 5 to electric buses and scooters. Known for their reliability, smart technologies, and attractive designs, VinFast EVs have gained popularity across diverse markets, including the U.S., Canada, and Europe.
As Mexico’s EV market grows, this partnership underscores the nation’s potential to become a leader in sustainable transport. With the collaboration between VinFast and CTM, Durango is set to become a model city for green mobility, paving the way for other regions in Mexico to follow suit.
The move reflects a broader global trend, as VinFast continues to strengthen its presence in international markets and champion the transition to environmentally friendly transportation systems.
