The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), in collaboration with the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI), has announced a joint initiative to advance indigenous technologies in the electric vehicle (EV) sector. The announcement was made during a ceremony at Electronics Niketan in New Delhi, where the two ministries launched a joint call for proposals focused on developing EV sub-systems. This initiative is part of the government’s efforts to promote Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) in the field of electric mobility.

During the event, Shri S. Krishnan, Secretary of MeitY, emphasized the potential for innovators, researchers, and industry-academia partnerships to drive technology development. He highlighted the importance of creating indigenous products for India’s EV ecosystem. Dr. Hanif Qureshi, Additional Secretary at MHI, also expressed optimism, stating that this collaboration will play a significant role in boosting the development of local EV technologies.

The call for proposals is centered around key areas of EV innovation, including EV chargers and charging infrastructure, electric motors and drives, battery and battery management systems, telematics, and functional safety and security systems. The initiative also aims to establish centers for prototyping and testing EV sub-systems, ensuring their validation and readiness for commercialization. By encouraging participation from research institutions, startups, and industry players, the initiative is expected to bring forward innovative solutions that will help strengthen India’s EV ecosystem.

The selected proposals will receive financial support from MeitY, while MHI will offer standardization and testing services to ensure the quality of the developed technologies. Interested institutions, industries, and academic bodies can submit their proposals via the MeitY website. This initiative aligns with India’s broader vision of becoming self-reliant in the electric vehicle sector and positions the country to become a global leader in EV technology development.

The program will focus on developing EV sub-systems with a high proportion of indigenous components, aiming for cost-effective and commercially viable products. The government is particularly interested in projects that demonstrate advanced readiness for commercialization. This joint initiative is expected to contribute significantly to India’s EV adoption goals and the development of a more sustainable and electrified future. Details on how to participate are available on the MeitY website.
