In the fiscal year 2023-24, India witnessed a remarkable surge in electric vehicle (EV) adoption, significantly impacting the country’s electricity consumption patterns. According to data from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), the total electricity consumed by EVs in March 2024 reached a staggering 445.971 million units, showcasing the increasing penetration of EVs on Indian roads.
One of the standout regions in this trend was Maharashtra, where the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) emerged as a frontrunner in facilitating EV charging infrastructure and heavy-duty Power Conditioning Systems (PCS). MSEDCL alone accounted for a notable 20.14% share of the total electricity utilized by EVs across various distribution companies nationwide, highlighting the state’s proactive stance towards promoting electric vehicle adoption.

Close on the heels of MSEDCL were prominent distribution companies in Delhi, including BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL), Tata Power- Delhi Distribution Limited (Tata Power- DDL), and BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL). Together, these entities contributed significantly, accounting for a substantial 292.973 million units of electricity consumed by EVs. The collaborative efforts of these companies underscored the pivotal role of urban centers like Delhi and Maharashtra in driving the electric vehicle revolution.
Delhi, in particular, demonstrated a strong commitment to EV adoption, with BRPL, Tata Power- DDL, and BYPL actively supporting EV charging infrastructure. This collective endeavor between distribution companies in Maharashtra and Delhi resulted in an impressive 67.04% share of the total electricity consumed by EVs nationwide.
Zooming out to a broader perspective, the top ten distribution companies collectively represented a significant 89.43% share of the total electricity consumed by EVs, indicating the concentrated impact of key players in driving EV adoption and promoting sustainable transportation practices across the country.
The monthly penetration of EVs is steadily increasing, leading to a surge in electricity consumption, particularly in states like Delhi and Maharashtra. These regions have witnessed a rapid rise in EV adoption, fueled by supportive policies and robust charging infrastructure. Gujarat, Haryana, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh have also shown remarkable growth in electricity consumption by EVs, reflecting their commitment to fostering an eco-friendly transportation ecosystem.
The data from the fiscal year 2023-24 highlights the growing influence of electric vehicles on India’s energy landscape. Specific distribution companies and states have played pivotal roles in advancing the transition towards cleaner and sustainable transportation. However, this also underscores the need for continued investments and policy support to further accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles and mitigate the environmental impacts associated with conventional fossil fuel-powered vehicles.
