In a bold move to democratize electric mobility, Volkswagen Group has announced a groundbreaking project aimed at bringing all-electric, entry-level vehicles to the European market. The initiative will see compact electric cars priced around €20,000, with a world premiere slated for 2027.
“Generations of people associate the strong brands of the Volkswagen Group with their first car – and with affordable mobility,” stated Oliver Blume, CEO of Volkswagen Group. “We continue to assume this social responsibility. That’s why I’m very pleased that we’re launching a future-oriented project. It’s about entry-level electric mobility from Europe for Europe.”
This project underscores Volkswagen’s commitment to providing electromobility for all, a promise emphasized by Thomas Schäfer, CEO of the Volkswagen brand and head of the Core brand group. “Despite the attractive price, our electric cars will set standards in the entry-level segment in terms of technology, design, quality, and customer experience,” Schäfer asserted.
The initiative is set to boost Europe’s industrial landscape by heavily localizing production. This strategy not only supports European industrial policy but also reduces CO2 emissions by minimizing long transport routes for components.
Intensive work is already underway on the “Electric Urban Car Family,” targeting electric cars under €25,000 by the end of 2025. This lineup will include two compact cars from VW and CUPRA, and two small SUVs from Škoda and VW, all manufactured in Spain.
Volkswagen’s latest venture marks a significant milestone in the journey towards widespread electromobility in Europe, promising affordable, sustainable transportation solutions in a rapidly evolving market.
