Transformative Partnership: Tata Motors Launches Next-Gen Green-Fuel Commercial Vehicles for Tata Steel, Pioneering Sustainable Mobility Solutions

Tata Motors, India’s largest commercial vehicle manufacturer, initiated the handover of its next-generation environmentally-friendly commercial vehicles to Tata Steel. This fleet, comprising Prima tractors, tippers, and the Ultra EV bus, is powered by both Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and battery electric technologies. The ceremonial flag-off took place in Jamshedpur as part of the Tata Group’s Founder’s Day celebration, with Mr. N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, presiding over the event. Key attendees included Mr. T V Narendran, CEO & Managing Director of Tata Steel, and Mr. Girish Wagh, Executive Director of Tata Motors, along with their leadership teams.

Reflecting on the enduring collaboration between Tata Motors and Tata Steel, T. V. Narendran, CEO & Managing Director of Tata Steel, emphasized the shared commitment to sustainability and innovation. The deployment of these advanced vehicles aligns with both companies’ vision for environmentally responsible practices, contributing to a greener future.

Mr. Girish Wagh, Executive Director of Tata Motors, highlighted the role of Tata Motors in driving the global trend towards sustainable, safe, and intelligent mobility in India. The green fleet of commercial vehicles aims to support Tata Steel’s endeavor to achieve a carbon-neutral supply chain. Collaboration has led to the design of comprehensive solutions, focusing on functionality, performance, connectivity, and safety. These purposefully enhanced vehicles cater to diverse duty cycles and special applications, strengthening the historic partnership in the pursuit of carbon footprint reduction and achieving net-zero emissions by 2045.

Tata Motors’ new-age commercial vehicles boast advanced safety features, such as the Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), Electronic Stability Control, Active Traction Control, and Driver Monitoring System. These vehicles were handed over to Tata Steel’s delivery partners responsible for transporting steel products and raw materials.

Designed for various applications, the Tata Prima LNG truck range, including Tippers (3530.K) and Tractors (5530.S), will serve surface mining and long-haul commercial transportation needs. As part of the accelerated adoption of battery-electric vehicles, the 28T EV Tipper (E28.K) and 46T EV Tractor (E46.S) will be deployed to evaluate real-world performance in Tata Steel’s logistic movement. Alongside these zero-emission trucks, Tata Ultra EV buses will be employed for employee transport across plant locations.

Tata Motors has been at the forefront of developing and manufacturing innovative mobility solutions powered by alternate fuel technology, such as battery electric, CNG, LNG, Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine, and Hydrogen Fuel Cell technology. The company showcased an extensive range of alternate-fuel-powered commercial vehicles at the Auto Expo 2023 and Bharat Mobility Global Expo in February 2024 across various segments. To date, Tata Motors has delivered over 2,000 electric buses to multiple cities in India, collectively covering more than 12 crore kilometers, with an impressive uptime exceeding 95%.
