Kailash Gahlot, Delhi Transport Minister, stated that 16.7% of December’s vehicles sold were electric. These figures show that Delhi residents are open to the idea of using the new technology. Gahlot stated that 7,046 electric vehicles had been sold in December.
He also claimed that Delhi had the largest share of EVs in vehicle purchases in that month, compared to all other states and Union Territories. The contribution to the month will rise to 20.5% if hybrid-petrol vehicle sales are included. He said that Delhi had registered 7,046 EVs in December with an 86% year-on-year increase.
He stressed that electric vehicle sales have increased since August 2020 when the government launched the Electric Vehicle Policy. In 2019, electric vehicle sales accounted for 3.6% of total vehicle sales. This figure has risen to 10.27% in 2022.
“Delhiites are taking the lead and adopting the new technology. The contribution of electric vehicles to overall sales fell to 2.9% in 2020 due to COVID-19, but there was an increase of 5.6% in the contribution to 2021. He said that the overall contribution of EVs was 10.7% last year.”
There are over 1.9 lakh EVs on Delhi’s roads. After the policy, 93,239 vehicles were sold in the capital.
