Volvo Trucks' first battery assembly plant in Belgium will supply tailor-made batteries for the company's heavy-duty electric trucks

“This investment demonstrates our strong commitment towards electrifying truck transport.” Roger Alm, President, Volvo Trucks, stated that by 2030 at least 50% of all trucks sold globally will be electric. By 2040, the company will be carbon-neutral.

The new battery plant will use cells and modules from Samsung SDI to make battery packs for Volvo Trucks’ heavy duty electric range. These include the Volvo FH, Volvo FM, and Volvo FMX. The third quarter of the year will see series production begin.

Less lead time and greater circularity
Each battery pack is 90 kWh in capacity and customers can have up to six (540 kWh) batteries per truck. The number of batteries required by each customer will depend on their specific requirements and load capacities.

Roger Alm says, “By integrating battery assembly into our production flow, it is possible to reduce lead times for customers, secure high-performing batteries while increasing circularity”.

Volvo Trucks’ batteries can be reused and remanufactured. The power plant is powered entirely by renewable energy.

Electric solutions to most transport needs
Volvo Trucks will begin production in Europe this year of three heavy-duty electric models. This makes Volvo Trucks the largest global manufacturer of electric trucks, with six models that cover everything, from urban distribution and refuse handling to regional transport, construction, and other work.

“We have been producing electric trucks in series since 2019 and we are the market leaders in Europe as well as North America.” Roger Alm says that he is confident that the truck industry will undergo rapid change due to the rapid advancement of charging networks and battery technology.
