EVgo Inc., the nation’s largest public charging network for electric cars (EVs), and first to be powered by 100% renewable energy, announced today that it has been selected by Portland as its partner in the deployment of electric vehicle charging infrastructure on city property. EVgo and the City of Portland will partner to install eight DCFC chargers and as many as 44 Level 2 chargers.
EVgo, the first North American EV charging system powered by 100% renewable electricity is in line with Portland’s commitment of providing more options for residents and the city fleet to reduce carbon emissions. Portland has pledged to reduce its carbon emissions by 80% by 2050, and to switch to 100% clean energy by 2040. This partnership will enable drivers to get electric and charge their cars around the city, with 30% of Portland’s carbon emissions coming from transportation.
Colin Murchie, Senior Director, Business Development at EVgo, stated that EVgo was thrilled to work with Portland to provide EV charging solutions for City sites. This will help residents, visitors, and the municipal fleet make the switch to electric vehicles. “Portland has always been an area that recognizes the many ways of sailing a ship. A combination of fast charging with level 2 charging is exactly what Portland’s residents, teachers, employees, residents, and visitors need to make the transition to electric vehicles”.
Troy Moon, City Sustainability Director, stated that Portland residents must feel comfortable charging their electric vehicles before purchasing them. “That’s why we are partnering with EVgo in creating charging hubs within neighborhoods that have large numbers of multi-family homes. Residents without access to home charging can plug their car in close to their home, and then they can go about their daily lives while it charges”.
Once installed, EVgo DC fast chargers for Portland will allow drivers to access 100+ kW chargers that can charge as high as 80% of their devices in as little as 15 to 45 minutes. Teachers and city workers will have access to charging at work during school hours with the Level 2 chargers. Public charging will be possible in school parking lots during school hours. Portland drivers will also enjoy the advantages of EVgo’s wider industry-leading network in more than 30 US states. With its proven reliability, wide geographic reach, 24/7 customer support, and proven reliability, Portlanders will be able to take advantage of EVgo’s extensive network.
