The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has announced that it currently supplies electricity to more than 2,000 electric vehicle (EV) charging points across public, private and residential locations within its franchise area in the Philippines. The development reflects the growing adoption of electric mobility and the increasing need for reliable electricity infrastructure to support the country’s transition towards cleaner transportation.
As the largest electricity distribution utility in the Philippines, Meralco plays an important role in supporting the expansion of EV charging infrastructure. The company is working to ensure that its electricity network can accommodate rising demand from electric vehicles while maintaining reliable and safe power supply. Investments in grid modernization and distribution infrastructure are expected to support the growing requirements of EV charging stations and other distributed energy resources.
Meralco participates in the country’s developing electric mobility sector in three main capacities: as an enabler, an end-user and a market participant. Through its electricity distribution operations, the company supplies power to public and commercial charging facilities, helping improve access to charging services for EV owners. Its involvement also includes adopting electric vehicles within its own operations and developing services that support wider commercial adoption.
The company has set a target to electrify 25% of its corporate vehicle fleet by 2030. This initiative is supported by workplace charging facilities and employee-focused electric vehicle programmes. By introducing EVs into its own fleet, Meralco aims to contribute to the development of practical experience in electric mobility while supporting efforts to reduce dependence on conventional fuel-powered transportation.
Meralco is also expanding its presence in the sector through Movem Electric, Inc., its wholly owned electric mobility subsidiary. The company provides services including EV leasing, transportation solutions and specialized charging infrastructure for corporate fleets and commercial locations. Through its operational platform, Movem Electric supports businesses seeking to integrate electric vehicles into their transportation and logistics operations.
The expansion of charging points highlights the importance of coordination between electricity providers, mobility service companies and businesses as EV adoption increases. Reliable charging access, adequate grid capacity and suitable infrastructure will remain essential to supporting the transition.
Meralco’s initiatives are contributing to the development of the Philippines’ electric mobility ecosystem by combining electricity distribution capabilities, fleet electrification and commercial charging solutions. These efforts support broader national ambitions to promote sustainable transportation and increase the use of cleaner energy technologies.
