India Is Fast Pacing Towards EV Adoption With 877,000 EVs On Roads

In accordance with the Minister of State for Heavy Industries Krishan Pal Gurjar, India presently has 877,000 electric vehicles (EV) on its roads, with Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, and Karnataka emerging as the leading three states for EV enrolment, in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.

According to statistics examined by JMK Research, EV registrations in November 2021 were primarily driven by electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers for passengers, which accounted for 92% of overall registrations in the month. 

While the cargo-type electric three-wheelers and electric cars account for 3.9% and 3.7% respectively.

Uttar Pradesh with 20% of total EV sales in India continue to have the highest monthly recorded EV sales, Maharashtra being at the second spot with 11%, followed by Karnataka (9%), Rajasthan (9%), and Delhi (9%) in Nov 2021, stated JMK Research’s report.

MG and Tata Motors are top in the selling of e-car in the country. The accumulated registrations of EVs of both automakers account for 98% in Nov 2021.

Phase II of the FAME scheme, with a total funding allocation of INR 10,000 crore, focuses on empowering electrification of public and shared mobility and aims to support, through incentives, approximately 7,000 e-buses, 55,000 electric four-wheeler passenger cars, five lakh e-three wheelers, and ten lakh e-two wheelers.

The government has approved 2,877 EV charging stations worth INR 500 crore in 68 cities across 25 states/UTs, and 1,576 charging stations worth INR 108 crore across nine expressways and 16 highways.

According to the government, two Production Linked Incentive (PLI) programmes developed by the Ministry of Heavy Industries to promote the manufacturing of electric cars aided EV producers in escalating sales.

The Delhi government is furnishing a subsidy of INR 6,000 to the first 30,000 applicants for charging facilities and will charge only INR 2,500 to set up private chargers for light EVs, such as two and three-wheelers, in malls, flats, hospitals, and other public places throughout the city.

Neuron Energy is building an immense depot/warehouse to make Delhi the primary centre for all EV supplies in the North India region. The firm intends to widely distribute its swappable battery for electric 3W and 2W in Delhi NCR, along with creating charging infrastructure across the city, according to Neuron Energy co-founder Pratik Kamdar.

Chartered Bike, a subsidiary of Chartered Speed, is also introducing approximately 2,000 electric bikes and 200 charging stations across Mumbai over the next 3-6 months.

Meanwhile, Altigreen has teamed with SpareIt to use its garages as EV servicing centres. According to JMK Research, these garages have been cultivated on EV technologies and have been instilled with Altigreens’ standard service operating procedures.
