E.ON and Tank & Rast have been awarded a contract under the German government’s Deutschlandnetz programme to build and operate a nationwide charging infrastructure for battery-electric trucks, marking a significant step toward decarbonizing long-haul freight transport.
The project includes the deployment of 195 charging points across 24 motorway locations, with each company responsible for developing and operating half of the sites. The initiative combines Tank & Rast’s expertise in transport infrastructure with E.ON’s capabilities in planning, deploying, and operating large-scale fast-charging networks.
The charging network will feature 101 megawatt charging system (MCS) points, representing one of the first large-scale public deployments of megawatt charging technology in Germany. Designed for heavy-duty electric vehicles, the MCS chargers will enable rapid energy delivery, allowing logistics operators to recharge trucks during mandatory driving breaks and rest periods, thereby improving operational efficiency.
The infrastructure will also include 32 CCS charging points rated at 400 kW for shorter charging stops and 62 CCS charging points rated at 150 kW for overnight and longer-duration charging. The combination of charging technologies is intended to support a range of operational requirements for freight transport.
Beyond the charging equipment, the project encompasses supporting infrastructure, including grid connections, transformer stations, IT connectivity, and reservation systems. According to the companies, the network has been designed to meet high standards for safety, accessibility, and long-term operational reliability.
Timo Sillober, CEO of E.ON Drive Infrastructure, said the development of charging infrastructure is essential for accelerating electric truck adoption, adding that the company plans to expand its truck charging network along major motorway corridors in Germany from 2027.
Peter Markus Löw, CEO of Tank & Rast Group, said the partnership aims to strengthen charging availability at motorway service areas and truck stops, helping create a more comprehensive charging ecosystem to support the future of electric logistics in Germany.
The project forms part of Germany’s publicly funded Deutschlandnetz programme, which aims to establish a high-performance charging network for electric vehicles and accelerate the country’s transition to sustainable road transport.
