Ola Electric Becomes First Indian Company to Secure BIS Certification for Indigenous 46100 LFP Cell

Ola Cell Technologies (OCT), a wholly owned subsidiary of Ola Electric, has received Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification under IS 16046 (Part 2):2018 / IEC 62133-2:2017 for its indigenously developed LFP 46100 cylindrical cell. With this achievement, Ola Electric has become the first Indian company to secure BIS certification for a locally developed cell in the 46100 format, marking a significant milestone in India’s advanced battery manufacturing journey.

The certified LFP 46100 cell has also successfully qualified under IS 16893 Parts 2 and 3, as well as UN 38.3 standards, confirming compliance with stringent electrical, mechanical, environmental, reliability, abuse, and transportation safety requirements.

According to the company, the cell has been developed with substantial localization across materials, components, engineering, and manufacturing processes, reflecting Ola Electric’s growing capability to design, qualify, and industrialize advanced battery technologies within India.

To obtain BIS certification, the LFP 46100 cell underwent a comprehensive series of safety, performance, and endurance evaluations at a National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL)-accredited facility. The testing program included assessments for thermal abuse, external short circuits, forced discharge, impact resistance, altitude simulation, abnormal charging, vibration, continuous low-rate charging, crush resistance, free fall, and mechanical shock.

Commenting on the development, an Ola Electric spokesperson stated that the certification represents an important step in the company’s efforts to build an advanced electric vehicle and energy ecosystem in India. The spokesperson noted that the achievement highlights the strength of the company’s research and development, engineering, and manufacturing capabilities while reinforcing its commitment to developing globally competitive battery technologies domestically.

The newly certified LFP 46100 platform expands Ola Electric’s in-house battery portfolio beyond its NMC-based 4680 Bharat Cell. The company stated that the platform provides a technology foundation for future electric mobility and stationary energy storage applications.

The cell offers an energy density exceeding 170 Wh/kg and is designed to operate across a wide temperature range. It also has a development roadmap targeting more than 4,000 charge-discharge cycles, making it suitable for applications where safety, lifecycle performance, and cost efficiency are critical considerations.

Ola Electric highlighted that thousands of vehicles powered by its 4680 Bharat Cells are already operating on Indian roads, collectively covering millions of kilometres under real-world conditions. The company said this on-road validation demonstrates the reliability and scalability of its battery technologies while supporting the expansion of domestic cell manufacturing capabilities.

The company’s Gigafactory remains central to its long-term battery strategy. By developing both NMC and LFP battery chemistries on a common 46-series architecture, Ola Electric aims to deploy the most suitable technology across electric mobility and energy storage applications while increasing domestic value addition and reducing reliance on imported cell technologies.

The latest certification comes as India accelerates efforts to strengthen its battery manufacturing ecosystem and achieve greater energy independence through localized advanced energy storage technologies.
