BMW Group has unveiled a new generation of electric and digital mobility at Auto China 2026, marking what it calls the beginning of a “new era” driven by its Neue Klasse technology platform.
The company presented three global premieres: the BMW iX3 Long Wheelbase, BMW i3 Long Wheelbase, and an updated BMW 7 Series featuring Neue Klasse innovations for the first time. These models highlight BMW’s strategic focus on electrification, digitalisation, and software-defined vehicles, particularly tailored for the Chinese market—its largest single market globally.
According to BMW, the new iX3 and i3 are the first Neue Klasse models developed specifically for China. Both vehicles incorporate sixth-generation eDrive technology, featuring advanced cylindrical battery cells and an 800-volt architecture. The iX3 offers a range exceeding 900 km, while the i3 surpasses 1,000 km on a single charge (CLTC standard). Fast-charging capabilities allow up to 400 km of range to be added in just 10 minutes.
The new BMW 7 Series, positioned as the brand’s flagship luxury sedan, integrates these next-generation technologies into an existing model line. It introduces innovations such as BMW Panoramic iDrive, a new digital interface combining touch, voice, and haptic controls, alongside an AI-powered personal assistant enhanced with localized technologies for China.
BMW also emphasized advancements in driver assistance systems, including navigation-guided “Address-to-Address” support tailored specifically for Chinese traffic conditions. Developed in collaboration with local tech partners, the system reflects BMW’s strategy of combining global expertise with regional innovation.
Beyond electric mobility, BMW showcased future-facing concepts such as the iX3 Flow Edition, featuring E Ink technology capable of changing exterior design elements, and the iX5 Hydrogen prototype, previewing the company’s plans for hydrogen-powered production vehicles starting in 2028.
The exhibition also highlighted the MINI brand, with concept vehicles and special editions emphasizing design individuality and lifestyle appeal.
BMW’s expansive presence at the show—spanning 4,400 square meters and featuring over 40 vehicles—underscores the importance of China in its global growth strategy. The company continues to deepen partnerships with local technology firms to enhance digital ecosystems, navigation, and AI integration in its vehicles.
With the Neue Klasse platform at its core, BMW aims to redefine its future lineup, combining long-range electric performance, advanced software systems, and market-specific innovations to stay competitive in the rapidly evolving global automotive landscape.
