TUAL has expanded the deployment of its battery-buffered PowerUp Charger technology across three SP Energy Networks sites in the UK, supporting the electrification of high-utilisation fleet vehicles at locations where conventional EV charging infrastructure may be constrained.
The rollout follows a successful pilot at SP Energy Networks’ Middlewich site in Cheshire and will extend the deployment to operational locations in Middlewich, Liverpool and Cambuslang near Glasgow.
TUAL’s PowerUp Charger combines integrated battery energy storage with high-power DC charging, allowing the system to draw and store electricity from the available grid connection and deliver ultra-rapid charging to electric vehicles when required.
Battery-Buffered Charging Supports Fleet Electrification
The technology is designed to enable faster deployment of ultra-rapid DC charging infrastructure while reducing the need for extensive civil engineering works and upgrades to existing electrical infrastructure.
For SP Energy Networks, ultra-rapid charging is required to minimise vehicle downtime and maintain fleet productivity. Charging sessions need to be completed within approximately 30-minute dwell periods during operational breaks and vehicle restocking visits.
TUAL said the PowerUp Charger can meet these requirements while causing minimal disruption to site operations. Its deployment flexibility also allows the units to be relocated if site requirements, lease arrangements or wider infrastructure plans change.
Battery Storage Adds Operational Resilience
The PowerUp Charger’s integrated battery storage provides an additional resilience benefit by storing energy on site for use during periods of power disruption.
According to TUAL, the units deployed for SP Energy Networks will hold approximately 600 miles of stored driving energy in the event of a power interruption. This is intended to help maintain the availability of electric vehicles supporting nationally critical energy infrastructure.

SP Energy Networks Expands EV Charging Deployment
Phil Jones of SP Energy Networks said the Middlewich trial demonstrated that TUAL’s technology could be deployed quickly while providing the required DC charging capability and operational resilience through its integrated battery.
The company has now expanded the deployment to three key operational locations, supporting its transition towards an electric fleet while maintaining the flexibility required across its sites.
The rollout forms part of TUAL’s wider work with mission-critical and high-utilisation fleets operating in constrained environments. Its charging technology is designed for sectors including utilities, emergency response, logistics, commercial vehicles, ports, defence and other applications where vehicle availability and charging reliability are critical.
The deployment highlights the growing role of battery-buffered EV charging systems in enabling fleet electrification at sites where conventional high-power charging infrastructure may be difficult or costly to deploy.
