India’s public transport electrification drive has gained fresh momentum as Delhi expanded its electric bus fleet by 500 vehicles, strengthening its position as the country’s largest operator of electric buses and signalling a decisive shift in urban mobility planning.
With this latest addition, the national capital’s e-bus fleet has crossed 4,000 units, reflecting the accelerating pace at which Indian cities are transitioning toward cleaner and more sustainable mass transport solutions. The development underscores the growing policy focus on reducing urban air pollution, cutting transport sector emissions, and modernising public transit infrastructure.
The rapid scale-up of electric buses in Delhi is part of a broader roadmap aimed at deploying 7,500 electric buses by 2026 and 14,000 by 2028. The city’s approach combines large-scale fleet induction with parallel investments in charging infrastructure, depot modernisation, and route optimisation to ensure operational efficiency and commuter convenience.
Beyond environmental benefits, the expansion is expected to deliver significant socio-economic gains, including improved passenger comfort, reduced noise pollution, and lower operating costs over the lifecycle of the fleet.
