Continental’s ContiTech sector has achieved a major milestone in sustainable manufacturing, with its facilities in Waltershausen and Eislingen becoming the first in Germany to earn the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS. This certification verifies that both plants meet stringent international standards for using and documenting renewable and recycled raw materials through a mass balance approach.

The ISCC PLUS certification enables Continental to integrate renewable and recycled raw materials, such as bio-based butadiene rubber and food waste-derived oils, directly into existing production processes. With this transparent mass balance system, the plants can accurately track and account for the proportion of certified materials used throughout the value chain.

Anne Windberg Baarup, Head of Sustainability for ContiTech, emphasized the significance of this achievement: “Achieving ISCC PLUS certification in Waltershausen and Eislingen is an important milestone toward a climate-neutral materials value chain in our industry. We are advancing the share of renewable and recycled raw materials in Continental products, supporting our customers’ sustainability goals, and promoting a circular economy.”

The certification at Waltershausen includes key rubbers such as butadiene rubber and EPDM, used in products like tires and seals, while the Eislingen site certifies polyolefin-based surface materials for automotive interiors. These certified compounds maintain the same quality and regulatory compliance as their fossil-based counterparts, showcasing Continental’s commitment to resource efficiency and sustainable innovation across its product lines.
