Volkswagen Group Charging GmbH (Elli) has unveiled its latest innovation in sustainable charging solutions with the launch of the Elli Charger 2, its first smart charger in Europe. Designed to integrate with home solar power systems, the Elli Charger 2 offers a groundbreaking combination of solar surplus and price-optimized charging, allowing electric vehicles (EVs) to charge at the most environmentally friendly and cost-effective times.
A New Milestone in Smart Charging
The Elli Charger 2 leverages smart technology to maximize the use of renewable energy, charging EVs when solar power is abundant or when electricity market prices are at their lowest. This marks a significant advancement in the energy transition for households, enabling them to reduce both costs and reliance on grid electricity.
Giovanni Palazzo, CEO of Elli and SVP of Volkswagen Charging & Energy, emphasized the impact of the innovation, stating, “Our new charger helps make charging electric cars even more environmentally friendly by ensuring that EVs are charged when green electricity is readily available and cheap. In addition, we are creating a framework to use EVs as energy storage to help stabilize the power grid.”
Partnership with Otovo for Solar Solutions
In a move to further integrate renewable energy into households, Elli has partnered with Norwegian solar power marketplace Otovo. Customers in Germany can now purchase a complete solar power system alongside the Elli Charger 2, with installations available at selected Volkswagen dealerships in cities like Hamburg, Ulm, and Augsburg. The collaboration is part of a pilot project that aims to expand across Europe in the near future.
Key Features of the Elli Charger 2
Solar Surplus Charging: Utilizes excess solar energy to charge EVs, reducing dependence on the electrical grid and maximizing renewable energy use.
Price-Optimized Charging: Automatically adjusts charging schedules based on electricity prices, allowing customers to save up to 40% on costs.
Versatility: The charger supports any EV with a Type 2 charging port and can be used in homes, semi-public, and public charging spaces.
Future-Proof Technology: Remote software updates and app control ensure the charger remains up-to-date and user-friendly.
Seamless Integration: Best-in-class synchronization with Volkswagen, CUPRA, and Škoda EVs optimizes charging processes and battery management.
With a charging capacity of up to 22 kW, the Elli Charger 2 is poised to become a key player in the sustainable energy market, setting new standards for home EV charging in Europe.
