The Dane County Sheriff’s Office has successfully integrated Ford Pro™ Telematics into its fleet of 127 vehicles, using the technology to enhance officer safety and streamline vehicle maintenance. Ford Pro Telematics, which collects real-time data from police vehicles, has become an essential tool for the department, aiding in critical incidents like crash notifications and routine upkeep.
Captain Kerry Porter emphasized the life-saving potential of the crash notification system. “Even in remote areas, Ford Pro Telematics allows us to respond quickly when an officer is involved in an accident, even if they’re incapacitated.” This feature proved invaluable during a recent incident where Deputy Ben Kunde’s police SUV was struck by a speeding civilian vehicle on an icy highway. Thanks to the built-in system, the Sheriff’s Office was instantly alerted to the crash, ensuring a swift response.
In addition to its safety features, Telematics is revolutionizing fleet management. Fleet and Asset Coordinator Jenna Shelley highlighted how the system allows for real-time tracking of maintenance needs, from low tire pressure to overdue oil changes. “The data we get is more accurate and actionable, helping us shift from reactive repairs to proactive maintenance,” Shelley said, noting how this approach maximizes vehicle uptime.
Ford Pro Telematics also simplifies coordination with local dealerships, ensuring that service is scheduled efficiently and completed without disrupting patrol operations. “We’ve reduced the risks by ensuring vehicles are always in top condition,” Shelley added.
