In partnership with IAA TRANSPORTATION, E.ON hosted the inaugural eTruckathon today, showcasing the practicality of electric and fuel cell trucks alongside the necessary charging and hydrogen infrastructure. The event featured a long-distance test from Essen to Hanover, bringing together top vehicle manufacturers and logistics companies with E.ON’s e-mobility experts for the first time.
Participants included teams from major companies like Daimler Truck, DB Schenker, DHL, Hyundai, MAN, and Renault, among others. The demonstration began at E.ON’s Drive TestingLab in Essen, where charging solutions for electromobility are developed. The 300-kilometer route, which included highways and country roads, tested the trucks in real-world conditions. Although the trucks had enough range to complete the journey, planned charging stops were made to highlight the practicality of charging infrastructure. The journey concluded at the IAA exhibition grounds in Hanover.
Marc Spieker, Chief Operating Officer at E.ON, explained, “With the eTruckathon, we are bringing together the leading players in the industry and providing a practical insight into the current possibilities of environmentally friendly heavy goods transport. In many areas, electric and hydrogen trucks are already suitable for everyday use. The technologies are available. In the coming years, it will be a matter of bringing them into widespread and affordable use. On the industry side, we are not waiting for this future, we are simply implementing it.”
Jürgen Mindel, Managing Director of the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), emphasized, “E.ON’s initiative fits perfectly into the concept of the IAA TRANSPORTATION. The eTruckathon provides a clear and practical demonstration of how the transformation to sustainable mobility in freight transport can be successfully implemented. Together we are actively shaping the future.”
