Japanese Industry Giants Collaborate to Pioneer Carbon-Neutral Fuels by 2030

In a significant move towards a carbon-neutral future, Idemitsu Kosan Co., Ltd. (“Idemitsu Kosan”), ENEOS Corporation (“ENEOS”), Toyota Motor Corporation (“Toyota”), and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (“MHI”) have announced a joint study to introduce and spread carbon-neutral fuels in Japan by 2030. This collaborative effort aims to decarbonize the automobile industry and contribute to the realization of a carbon-neutral society.

Understanding Carbon-Neutral Fuels

Carbon-neutral fuels are designed to limit CO2 emissions throughout their entire lifecycle. These fuels include synthetic fuels (e-fuels) produced using hydrogen and CO2, and biofuels derived from plants that absorb CO2 via photosynthesis. Liquid carbon-neutral fuels, in particular, offer advantages in terms of energy storage and transportation, making them suitable for widespread use.

Collaborative Efforts for a Carbon-Neutral Future

The scope of the joint study by the four companies will encompass:

  • Developing scenarios and roadmaps for introducing carbon-neutral fuels in Japan’s automobile market.
  • Investigating the necessary systems for market introduction.
  • Assessing the feasibility of production with a focus on Japan’s energy security.
