Volkswagen and Mahindra Forge Deeper Collaboration in Electric Mobility with Component Supply Agreement

In a significant development for the advancement of electric mobility, Volkswagen Group and Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (M&M) have solidified their joint vision by signing the first supply agreement on components of Volkswagen’s Modular Electric Drive Matrix (MEB) for Mahindra’s purpose-built electric platform, INGLO.

This landmark deal encompasses the supply of specific electric components and unified cells, marking a definitive step forward in the collaboration between the two automotive giants. The agreement, which follows a partnering agreement and a term sheet established in 2022, underscores the commitment of both Volkswagen and Mahindra to further deepen their collaboration in the realm of electromobility.

Mahindra will notably become the first external partner to leverage Volkswagen’s groundbreaking unified cell concept, a cornerstone of Volkswagen’s battery strategy. The supply agreement, spanning several years, is projected to have a total volume of approximately 50 GWh over its lifetime.

The primary objective of this collaboration is to bolster the e-mobility footprint of Volkswagen Group and Mahindra in the Indian automotive market while expediting the electrification process in the region. Mahindra’s strategic plan includes the launch of five all-electric SUVs in India, based on its newly developed purpose-built electric platform, starting December 2024.

India, with over five million new vehicles per year as of 2023, stands as one of the largest automotive markets globally. The electrification of the passenger car segment in India is poised to witness significant momentum in the years ahead, making this collaboration particularly timely and impactful.

Volkswagen’s MEB platform and its components are already utilized by several Group brands including Volkswagen, Audi, Å koda, and SEAT/CUPRA, as well as external partners like Ford and now Mahindra. The partnership with Mahindra is spearheaded by Volkswagen Group Technology and its “Platform Business” unit, in close coordination with Å koda Auto Volkswagen India Pvt. Ltd.

This agreement not only signifies a milestone in the joint efforts of Volkswagen and Mahindra to advance electric mobility but also underscores their commitment to fostering innovation and sustainable transportation solutions for the future.
