BMW and SOLARWATT Expand Partnership to Power Smart Home Energy Future

BMW Group and SOLARWATT are deepening their long-standing collaboration to integrate electric vehicles into smart home energy ecosystems, marking a major step forward in sustainable mobility and home energy management.

The companies announced plans to launch advanced Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) integration for BMW’s upcoming Neue Klasse electric vehicles, including the BMW iX3 and BMW i3, by late 2026 in Germany, Austria, and the Netherlands.

The partnership will combine BMW’s bidirectional charging technology with SOLARWATT’s Home Energy Management System (HEMS), allowing electric vehicles to function as intelligent energy storage units within households. Through the integration, homeowners will be able to optimize solar energy use, reduce electricity costs, and improve energy self-sufficiency.

The system connects BMW electric vehicles, the BMW Wallbox Professional charger, photovoltaic solar systems, home battery storage, and household appliances into a single coordinated energy network. Surplus solar power generated during the day can be stored in the vehicle battery and later supplied back to the home when needed.

According to BMW Group, the technology represents the next stage of bidirectional charging following Germany’s first commercial Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) offering launched earlier in 2026.

Customers will manage the system through the My BMW App and the SOLARWATT Home app. The platform will also support dynamic electricity pricing and solar forecasting, helping users intelligently schedule charging and discharging cycles for maximum efficiency.

Peter Bachmann, Chief Product Officer at SOLARWATT, said the integration of electric vehicles as additional home battery storage would significantly increase the benefits of residential solar systems while reducing dependence on expensive grid electricity.

Marcus Krieg, Vice President New Business at BMW Group, highlighted the broader energy transition potential of bidirectional charging, noting that electric vehicle batteries could collectively form a massive decentralized energy storage network capable of supporting power grids and renewable energy integration.

BMW and SOLARWATT have collaborated on electromobility solutions since 2013. Their partnership previously led to the launch of home battery storage systems incorporating technology derived from BMW electric vehicle components.

The companies stated that the new initiative aims to create a seamless and fully connected experience between vehicles and home energy systems, positioning both firms at the forefront of smart energy and sustainable mobility innovation.
