Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India announced that it will set up a separate unit in its Narsapura facility, Karnataka to produce electric two-wheelers. The first two models are expected to be on the market by the end of the current fiscal. The company plans to reach 10 lakh electric vehicles per year by 2030.

“Electric mobility is increasing in India, and our goal is to create the best EV business structure in the country. We are building a dedicated factory in Narsapura to meet our EV business needs,” Atsushi Ogata, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India’s President and CEO.

He said that the main components, including the battery, and other crucial components such as PCU, will be manufactured in-house in response to the government’s Make in India directive. Ogata stated that the motor will also be made locally.

HMSI will introduce a platform that would allow multiple EV models to be offered with swappable and fixed batteries.

Ogata stated that the company will use its existing sales network of approximately 6,000 touchpoints in order to create charging stations and battery swapping.

HMSI also plans to make use of the entire ecosystem, which includes battery-swapping stations located at petrol stations and metro stations, in order to offer convenient battery-swapping options for EV users.

Ogata stated that Honda is following a global direction to increase gasoline cell vehicle unit sales to 100% by 2040. The company will continue improving the efficiency of ICE engines through the introduction of flex-fuel engines, and follow government directions for alternative fuels.

“With our EV roadmap now in the execution phase, we’re taking significant steps towards creating unique infrastructure to manufacture a wide range of electric cars. He said that we are also investing in EV technologies, charging infrastructure, and aftersales service.”

HMSI, which has sold more than 40 lakh two-wheelers on the domestic market in this fiscal, has launched Project Vidyut, to create a new customer journey that meets the demands of the electrification age.

HMSI will launch two two-wheelers that are electric in the framework of this project in FY2024. The first is a mid-range electric vehicle and the second is a swappable type.
