In a significant move towards sustainability and market responsiveness, the BMW Group announces a groundbreaking step in its Brazilian operations. The Araquari plant, situated in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, is set to electrify its production line by introducing the production of the BMW X5, marking the first premium plug-in hybrid model to be manufactured in South America.

Michael Nikolaides, Head of Production Network and Logistics at BMW Group, emphasizes the company’s commitment to meeting market demands. With Brazil witnessing a historic surge in sales of electrified vehicles, accounting for 25% of the sales mix last year, and the BMW X5 emerging as the third-best model in the BMW lineup, the decision to produce the plug-in hybrid variant locally becomes a strategic imperative.

Nikolaides states, “At the BMW Group, production follows market demand. It is a logical conclusion for us to announce the production of the BMW X5 plug-in hybrid in Brazil now.” The Araquari plant, already producing models such as the BMW X1, BMW X3, BMW X4, and BMW 3 Series for the local market, will now add the technologically advanced and powerful BMW X5 plug-in hybrid to its portfolio.

What sets the Araquari plant apart is its flexibility and adaptability. Nikolaides proudly announces, “The BMW Group plant in Araquari has a flexible production line. Plant Araquari will be the only one to produce ICE, PHEV, and Flex-fuel models in the whole BMW Group production network.” This versatility enables quick responses to market shifts, ensuring that the production facility remains aligned with evolving customer preferences.

Since its inception in 2014, the Araquari plant has steadily expanded its capabilities. In December 2023, the BMW Group revealed plans for a 10% increase in production, aiming to reach an annual output of 11,000 units by 2024. Additionally, the workforce is undergoing consistent expansion and training to accommodate the production of electrified vehicles seamlessly.

As the automotive industry navigates towards a sustainable future, BMW’s initiative in Brazil signifies a proactive approach towards environmental stewardship and customer-centric production. With the introduction of the BMW X5 plug-in hybrid, the Araquari plant not only elevates Brazil’s automotive manufacturing prowess but also contributes significantly to the global electrification drive.
