Maruti Suzuki India Limited has achieved a major milestone in sustainable transportation logistics by surpassing 3 million cumulative vehicle dispatches through the Indian railway network, reinforcing its commitment to reducing carbon emissions and improving freight efficiency.

The company announced the achievement, highlighting rapid progress in shifting vehicle transportation from road to rail as part of its broader green logistics strategy. Maruti Suzuki India Limited said rail-based dispatches now account for 26.5% of its total outbound vehicle logistics, compared with just 5% in FY2014-15.

Notably, the jump from 2 million to 3 million cumulative rail dispatches was achieved in only 21 months, making it the fastest one-million increase in the company’s history.

Managing Director and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi said the automaker has invested more than ₹13.7 billion in dedicated green logistics infrastructure. This includes the development of in-plant railway sidings at its Hansalpur and Manesar manufacturing facilities, specialized automobile rail wagons, and upgrades to logistics hubs across India.

Maruti Suzuki aims to further increase the share of rail-based vehicle dispatches to 35% by FY2030-31. The company also plans to establish an additional in-plant railway siding at its upcoming Kharkhoda facility to support future expansion.

The automaker credited the Indian government’s PM GatiShakti National Master Plan for enabling integrated multimodal logistics and encouraging sustainable freight movement across the country.

Maruti Suzuki is currently the only passenger vehicle manufacturer in India operating railway sidings at two manufacturing plants. The Hansalpur railway siding in Gujarat became operational in 2023 and was virtually inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2024. Earlier this year, the facility also became the world’s first modal-shift transportation project registered under Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard program.

Meanwhile, the Manesar railway siding in Haryana, inaugurated in 2025 by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, is recognized as India’s largest automobile in-plant rail siding.

Together, the two facilities can dispatch up to 750,000 vehicles annually and serve more than 600 cities through a dedicated logistics network. Popular models transported via rail include the Dzire, WagonR, Swift, Brezza, Baleno, and Grand Vitara, along with export shipments routed to Mundra and Pipavav ports.

The milestone reflects growing momentum in India’s automotive sector toward cleaner and more efficient logistics systems as manufacturers seek to reduce fuel consumption, ease road congestion, and lower operational emissions.
