Honda Motor Co., Ltd. has reported a mixed performance for March 2026, with global automobile production declining year-on-year even as domestic output in Japan continued to grow.

Honda’s worldwide production for March 2026 stood at 313,259 units, marking a 4.8% decline compared to the same period last year. This represents the second consecutive month of year-on-year decline in global output. The drop was primarily driven by reduced production outside Japan, which fell 8% to 246,509 units.

In contrast, production in Japan rose 9.2% year-on-year to 66,750 units, extending its growth streak to four consecutive months. The increase was attributed to improved domestic manufacturing and export demand.

Regionally, North America recorded modest growth, with production rising 3.5% to 154,768 units, including a 2.9% increase in the United States. However, Asia saw a sharp decline of 28.9% to 79,249 units, largely due to reduced output in China, where production dropped 29.4% to 51,234 units.

For the full fiscal year 2025 (April 2025–March 2026), Honda’s global production declined 7.3% to 3.37 million units, marking the second consecutive year of decline. While Japan production increased slightly by 2.1% to 707,000 units, overseas production fell 9.5% to 2.66 million units.

Domestic sales in Japan also continued to face pressure. March sales fell 8.2% year-on-year to 70,038 units, marking the 12th consecutive month of decline. Both standard vehicle registrations and mini-vehicle sales recorded decreases, reflecting subdued consumer demand.

For the fiscal year, total domestic sales declined 8.9% to 609,209 units, the first annual drop in three years. Registrations fell 12%, while mini-vehicle sales dropped 4.8%, extending a downward trend in Japan’s small car segment.

Exports from Japan totaled 6,395 units in March, down 2.8% year-on-year, marking the first decline in two months. However, for the full fiscal year, exports increased significantly by 28.2% to 108,780 units, supported by strong demand in regions such as North America, Europe, and other international markets.

Despite ongoing challenges in global production and domestic sales, Honda’s export growth and stable performance in key markets highlight its continued focus on maintaining a balanced global strategy.

The latest data reflects broader shifts in the global automotive industry, including regional demand fluctuations and evolving production dynamics, as Honda navigates a complex and competitive market environment.
