Volkswagen AG has introduced a new full hybrid drive system set to debut in the Volkswagen Golf and Volkswagen T-Roc, marking a significant step in making electrification more accessible without relying on charging infrastructure.

The new hybrid technology, scheduled for launch in the fourth quarter of 2026, combines a turbocharged petrol engine with two electric motors to deliver improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions compared to mild hybrid systems. Unlike plug-in hybrids, the system does not require external charging, as it generates and stores energy onboard through recuperation and a petrol engine-driven generator.

Volkswagen officially presented the system at the Vienna Motor Symposium 2026, highlighting its strategy to expand electrified powertrain options across high-volume models.

The hybrid setup includes a 1.5-litre TSI evo2 engine, a drive motor, a generator, and a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 1.6 kWh. Integrated into a compact module, the system powers the front axle and incorporates components such as power electronics, a one-speed gearbox, and an electronically controlled clutch.

The vehicles operate across three automatic driving modes:

  • Electric mode: Enables silent, emission-free driving at low speeds, particularly in urban environments.
  • Serial mode: Uses the petrol engine to generate electricity, extending electric driving capability.
  • Parallel mode: Combines petrol and electric power for higher speeds and enhanced performance.

Drivers can also select between Eco, Comfort, and Sport profiles to adjust performance and efficiency levels.

According to Volkswagen, the new full hybrid fills the gap between its existing mild hybrid (eTSI) and plug-in hybrid (eHybrid and GTE) offerings. It allows for a higher proportion of electric driving while maintaining lower purchase costs and eliminating dependence on charging stations.

The move reflects Volkswagen’s broader strategy to offer a wide spectrum of electrified solutions, alongside its fully electric ID lineup, catering to diverse customer needs and usage scenarios.

By introducing this technology in popular models like the Golf and T-Roc, Volkswagen aims to bring hybrid efficiency to a larger customer base, reinforcing its transition toward sustainable mobility while maintaining practicality for everyday driving.
