In a landmark push towards clean and inclusive transportation, Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) and the United Nations in Ghana, in collaboration with the Ghana Investment Promotion Center, organized a high-level visit to Wahu Mobility—the country’s first electric bike (e-bike) manufacturing company. The event underscores Ghana’s growing commitment to low-carbon mobility in line with its ambitious net-zero targets.

Held at the Wahu Mobility facility, the event brought together senior government officials, UN representatives, development partners, private sector stakeholders, and media. The visit showcased how homegrown e-bike solutions are reducing carbon emissions, easing urban congestion, and creating local employment opportunities.

Clean Transport, Clean Future

As Ghana advances its Energy Transition and Investment Plan, the rise of e-mobility—especially electric two-wheelers—is being recognized as a key driver of sustainable development. Wahu Mobility is currently expanding operations to supply e-bikes for delivery and commuter services across Ghana and West Africa.

This project demonstrates the practical value of Ghana’s Energy Transition and Investment Plan—the world-class roadmap for the country’s net-zero ambitions, said Damilola Ogunbiyi, CEO of Sustainable Energy for All and Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General. Transport electrification alone accounts for 40% of the emissions reduction needed, and Ghana is revolutionizing how people live, move, and work in a greener economy.

Sustainable Goals in Action

The initiative aligns directly with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—notably SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 13 (Climate Action).

“We commend Ghana for its leadership in promoting inclusive, climate-smart development,” said Osama Makkawi Khogali, UN Resident Coordinator a.i. in Ghana. “Electric mobility not only addresses environmental concerns but also enhances lives and livelihoods.”

Innovation on Wheels

Attendees witnessed live demonstrations of the locally assembled e-bikes and engaged with engineers and users who shared firsthand accounts of reduced transportation costs and increased daily productivity.

Ghana’s strategic location and policy direction are making it an attractive destination for climate-smart investments, particularly in solar PV, battery storage, and electric mobility technologies.

The Ghana Energy Transition and Investment Plan, developed with SEforALL, envisions a net-zero economy by 2060. It aims to foster innovation in green industries and support the development of a low-carbon industrial ecosystem.

As Ghana steers ahead on its decarbonization journey, initiatives like Wahu Mobility highlight a promising model for sustainable growth—not just for the country, but for the region and beyond.
