In October 2024, India saw a substantial increase in electric two-wheeler sales, marking a shift in the country’s automotive landscape toward more sustainable transportation options. Leading this change was Ola Electric, a subsidiary of Ola Cabs, which captured a 33.87% market share by selling 15,183 units. This prominent position highlights Ola Electric’s role in advancing environmentally friendly transportation, especially at a time when concerns over environmental impact and fuel expenses are growing.
Hero MotoCorp also made significant strides in the electric mobility sector. The company held a 13.34% market share with 7,323 units sold, showcasing its commitment to electric transportation. Close behind, Ather Energy achieved a 13.07% market share by selling 5,857 units. Together, these top three companies accounted for a large portion of the total 28,363 electric two-wheelers sold through the Vahan Portal in October, indicating strong consumer interest and rapid adoption of electric vehicles across India. In total, about 44,823 electric two-wheelers were sold throughout the month.
This increase in electric two-wheeler sales is driven by a rising awareness of environmental sustainability, with more consumers seeking electric vehicles as cleaner alternatives to traditional fuel-based vehicles. The lower operational costs of electric two-wheelers, combined with rising fuel prices, make them a practical choice for daily commuting, adding to their appeal.
Other companies have also contributed to this growth. Greaves Electric Mobility, TVS Motor Company, BGauss Auto, Bajaj Auto, and Wardwizard Innovations & Mobility are all notable participants. Wardwizard, for instance, sold 703 units, highlighting its role in expanding India’s electric mobility options. Emerging companies like Revolt Intellicorp, River Mobility, PUR Energy, Simple Energy, and Okaya EV are similarly focusing on innovation and sustainability, building a strong base for India’s electric transportation future.
Looking forward, the outlook for India’s electric vehicle market is highly promising. With continuous technological advancements, favorable government policies, and rising consumer awareness, electric two-wheelers are on track to become a mainstream transportation choice. This transition not only supports global efforts to reduce carbon emissions but also positions India as a prominent player in the global shift toward electric mobility.
The surge in electric two-wheeler sales in October 2024 represents a significant move toward sustainable transportation in India. Major companies like Ola Electric, Hero MotoCorp, and Ather Energy are leading the charge, supported by a network of innovative players across the industry. This growth signals a cleaner and greener future for India’s automotive sector, with electric two-wheelers at the forefront of the shift.
