India’s Electric Two-Wheeler Boom Continues In May 2026 As Consumers Shift Toward EVs

India’s electric two-wheeler market maintained its strong growth trajectory in May 2026, reflecting the country’s rapidly evolving mobility ecosystem and increasing consumer preference for cleaner and cost-effective transportation options. According to data from the Vahan Portal, electric two-wheeler sales reached 122,606 units during the month, registering a significant year-on-year increase and reinforcing the growing acceptance of electric mobility across the country.

One of the primary factors driving this growth is the continued rise in petrol prices. Higher fuel costs have increased the operating expenses of conventional two-wheelers, encouraging daily commuters, gig workers, and delivery operators to explore electric alternatives. With lower running and maintenance costs, electric scooters and motorcycles are becoming a practical solution for consumers seeking long-term savings.

The market has also benefited from the launch of new models across various price categories. Manufacturers are offering products tailored to different customer segments, while advancements in battery technology, improved driving range, and expanding charging infrastructure are further boosting buyer confidence.

Government support remains a key catalyst for EV adoption. Incentives under central schemes, reduced GST rates of 5% on electric vehicles, and various state-level subsidies have significantly lowered the cost of ownership. Several states, including Delhi, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, and Kerala, have introduced dedicated EV policies aimed at accelerating electric mobility adoption. Many state transport departments and municipal bodies are also promoting the electrification of public transport, government fleets, and last-mile connectivity services, creating a favorable environment for electric two-wheelers.

Among manufacturers, TVS Motor led the market in May 2026 with sales of 29,781 units, followed closely by Bajaj Auto with 28,880 units. Ather Energy recorded sales of 20,492 units, while Hero MotoCorp sold 13,243 units. Ola Electric reported 9,634 units during the month. Collectively, these five companies accounted for nearly 83% of total electric two-wheeler sales, highlighting their dominant position in the market.

Global geopolitical developments are also shaping the EV sector’s outlook. Ongoing tensions in the Middle East, particularly involving Iran and Israel, have raised concerns about crude oil supply disruptions and potential fuel price increases. Such developments could further strengthen the appeal of electric vehicles. Although a weaker Indian rupee and supply chain uncertainties may increase battery and component costs, strong policy support, domestic manufacturing initiatives, and rising environmental awareness are expected to sustain growth in India’s electric two-wheeler market in the months ahead.
