Volkswagen Opens Pre-Sales for 125 kW Full Hybrid Golf and T-Roc with Electric Driving Capability and Self-Charging Technology

Volkswagen has launched pre-sales of its new 125 kW (170 PS) full hybrid powertrain for the Golf and T-Roc in Germany, expanding its electrified vehicle portfolio with a self-charging hybrid option that offers lower fuel consumption and reduced carbon emissions without requiring external charging.

The new Golf Hybrid is priced from €41,400 in the R-Line trim, while the T-Roc Hybrid starts at €44,470 in the Style variant.

The latest full hybrid system combines a 1.5-litre TSI evo2 turbocharged petrol engine, two electric motors, and a 1.6 kWh high-voltage battery. Unlike plug-in hybrids, the battery is recharged through regenerative braking and an onboard generator, allowing the vehicles to operate in electric mode during low-speed driving without the need for charging infrastructure.

Volkswagen said the hybrid powertrain delivers 125 kW (170 PS) of system output and 309 Nm of torque, improving both efficiency and performance compared with the company’s comparable 110 kW mild hybrid (eTSI) models.

According to the automaker, the Golf Hybrid achieves a combined fuel consumption of 4.6–5.1 litres per 100 km and CO₂ emissions of 104–117 g/km under the WLTP cycle. Compared with the Golf 1.5 eTSI, the new hybrid is expected to reduce fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions by 10–15%, while delivering up to 35% higher efficiency in urban driving. The vehicle also accelerates from 0–100 km/h in 7.5 seconds.

The T-Roc Hybrid records a combined fuel consumption of 5.0–5.6 litres per 100 km and CO₂ emissions ranging between 115–127 g/km, offering improved efficiency for customers in the compact SUV segment.

The hybrid system automatically switches between three operating modes depending on driving conditions. In Electric Drive Mode, the vehicle operates solely on electric power at lower speeds. Serial Hybrid Mode uses the petrol engine to generate electricity while propulsion remains electric, and Parallel Hybrid Mode combines the petrol engine and electric motor to maximise performance at higher speeds and during acceleration.

Drivers can also choose between Eco, Comfort, and Sport driving profiles, allowing the vehicle to prioritise either efficiency or performance based on driving preferences.

Volkswagen said the introduction of the new full hybrid technology broadens customer choice in the compact hatchback and SUV segments, bridging the gap between its existing eTSI mild hybrid models and eHybrid plug-in hybrid variants. The company also confirmed that an additional, higher-performance version of the full hybrid powertrain will be introduced at a later stage.
