The number of registered electric vehicles (EVs) in India has seen a significant rise, with a 42.06% increase in the fiscal year 2023-24 compared to the previous year, according to data from the e-Vahan portal managed by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH).
Minister of State for Heavy Industries and Steel, Shri Bhupathi Raju Srinivasa Varma, provided this information in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, highlighting the growing adoption of EVs across the country.
Yearly Breakdown of Registered Electric Vehicles:
- FY 2019-20: 1,73,604
- FY 2020-21: 1,42,383
- FY 2021-22: 4,59,058
- FY 2022-23: 11,83,341
- FY 2023-24: 16,81,127
The cumulative number of electric vehicles registered on the e-Vahan portal has reached 45,74,938 as of 29 July 2024. This substantial growth reflects the increasing shift towards sustainable transportation solutions in India, driven by government initiatives and growing consumer awareness of the benefits of electric mobility.
The data underscores the effectiveness of policies aimed at promoting EV adoption, including subsidies, tax incentives, and the development of charging infrastructure. The significant uptick in registrations is seen as a positive step towards achieving India’s ambitious climate goals and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
With the electric vehicle market gaining momentum, industry experts anticipate further growth in the coming years as technological advancements and supportive government policies continue to drive the sector forward.
