Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) has achieved a significant milestone by surpassing the 1 million mark in automatic vehicle sales. As India’s foremost automatic car manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki has been at the forefront of driving innovation in the automotive industry, particularly in promoting two-pedal automatic car technology within the country. Presently, MSIL offers a diverse range of automatic transmission systems, including Auto Gear Shift (AGS), 4-speed Automatic Transmission (AT), Advanced 6-speed Automatic Transmission (AT) equipped with Steering Mounted Paddle Shifters, and Electronic-Continuous Variable Transmission (e-CVT), spanning across 16 different models to cater to the evolving needs of its discerning customer base.
Having secured its position as India’s No. 1 Automatic Car Maker, Maruti Suzuki’s success is rooted in its commitment to adopting innovative technologies supported by valuable consumer insights. A pivotal moment came in 2014 with the introduction of the AGS technology, which rapidly gained immense popularity among customers. Presently, AGS-equipped vehicles make up a substantial 65% of the automatic vehicles sold by MSIL, while the share of AT automatic transmission models accounts for 27% of the total MSIL automatic sales. The Hybrid e-CVT transmission makes up about 8% of MSIL automatic sales.
Commenting on this remarkable achievement, Mr. Shashank Srivastava, Senior Executive Officer, Marketing and Sales at Maruti Suzuki India, stated, “At Maruti Suzuki, we are deeply committed to providing our customers with an exceptional driving experience and spreading the ‘Joy of Mobility.’ This commitment has driven us to democratize automatic transmission technology by offering a wide range of options. We are truly humbled by the overwhelming response from our customers. MSIL’s automatic car sales have consistently been on the rise, and we are already approaching the milestone of one lakh automatic vehicle sales for the FY23-24, marking a significant accomplishment for us.”
Mr. Srivastava further emphasized, “When examining consumer behavior, it’s noteworthy that NEXA customers tend to gravitate towards high-end automatic variants, whereas Arena customers prefer mid-variants when making their purchase decisions. As of now, NEXA accounts for approximately 58% of automatic car sales at MSIL, with Arena contributing about 42%.”
The regions making the most substantial contributions to Maruti Suzuki’s automatic car sales include the Delhi & NCR region, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh & Telangana, and Kerala. The 5-speed AGS gearbox is available in a range of models including Alto K-10, S-Presso, Celerio, WagonR, Ignis, Swift, Dzire, Baleno, and Fronx. Additionally, the 4-speed Automatic transmission is offered in the Jimny and Ciaz. The Advanced 6-speed Automatic transmission with Paddle Shifters is available in the Fronx, Brezza, Ertiga, XL6, and Grand Vitara.
