General Motors (GM) has revealed plans to relocate its global headquarters to Hudson’s Detroit, a historic site in the heart of downtown, affirming its enduring commitment to the city. This move, slated for 2025, underscores GM’s deep-rooted connection to Detroit, marking its fourth headquarters location in the city since 1911.
The decision solidifies GM’s position as the anchor tenant at Bedrock’s development on the site of the former J.L. Hudson Department Store, a significant milestone in the company’s rich history. CEO Mary Barra expressed pride in GM’s continued presence in Detroit, stating, “Our new headquarters will provide collaboration areas for our teams, executive offices, and display space for our vehicles, fitting the evolving needs of our workforce right in the heart of downtown.”
Dan Gilbert, Chairman & Founder of Bedrock, welcomed GM’s decision, emphasizing the company’s longstanding association with Detroit and its pivotal role in shaping the city’s future. “General Motors’ return to Woodward Avenue underscores its commitment to driving innovation and mobility from the heart of downtown Detroit,” he remarked.
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan hailed the move as a significant development for the city, noting GM’s pivotal role in Detroit’s revitalization efforts. “Hudson’s Detroit marks a significant development in the city and returns an iconic name back to where it belongs,” he stated, underscoring the positive impact of GM’s decision on the city’s economic growth and sustainability.
Wayne County Executive Warren C. Hudson’s Detroit, a sprawling 1.5-million-square-foot development, will serve as GM’s new headquarters, featuring office spaces, ground-floor retail, a 5-star hotel, residential condominiums, a public plaza, parking, and event spaces. The site holds historical significance as the former location of the iconic Hudson’s department store, once the foremost retailer in Detroit.
In addition to GM’s relocation, the company, alongside Bedrock, the city of Detroit, and Wayne County, will explore redevelopment opportunities for the Renaissance Center site over the next year.
