Chinese automotive giant SAIC Motor reported robust growth in the first five months of 2026, with total vehicle sales reaching 1.651 million units, reinforcing its position as one of China’s leading automakers.

According to the company, May sales totaled 349,000 vehicles, driven by strong demand for self-owned brands, accelerating new energy vehicle (NEV) adoption, and expanding overseas operations.

SAIC’s proprietary brands continued to gain momentum, recording 263,000 vehicle sales in May, up 14.7% year-on-year. From January to May, self-owned brands sold 1.173 million units, representing 71.1% of the group’s total sales volume for the first time. SAIC Motor Passenger Vehicle posted particularly strong results, with May sales rising 37.7% year-on-year to 100,000 units.

The company’s electric vehicle business also delivered impressive growth. May NEV sales surged 46.5% from a year earlier to 182,000 units, while cumulative NEV sales reached 595,000 units during the first five months of 2026. Premium EV brand IM Motors more than doubled its sales, while SAIC Motor Passenger Vehicle’s NEV deliveries soared 195% year-on-year.

Among standout models, the MG4 continued its strong performance, surpassing 15,000 sales in May and marking its eighth consecutive month with sales above 10,000 units. Meanwhile, newly launched EV models across the MG, Wuling, Volkswagen, and Audi portfolios contributed to growing consumer demand.

SAIC’s overseas business remained a major growth engine. International sales climbed 45.9% year-on-year to 589,000 units between January and May. The company strengthened its presence across Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Latin America, and other global markets through its “Glocal Strategy,” which emphasizes localized operations and brand development.

In Europe, MG maintained its status as the best-selling Chinese automotive brand, selling 150,000 vehicles during the period. The brand also achieved strong market positions in countries including the United Kingdom, Belgium, and Chile.

A significant milestone was reached on May 28 when SAIC celebrated its 100-millionth customer delivery, becoming the first Chinese automotive group to surpass 100 million cumulative vehicle production and sales. The achievement highlights more than seven decades of growth and marks a new chapter as the company accelerates its transition toward intelligent and electric mobility.

Looking ahead, SAIC Motor said it will continue investing in advanced technologies, expanding global operations, and making innovative mobility solutions more accessible to consumers worldwide.
