In a significant step toward sustainable mobility, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, the Indian subsidiary of Suzuki Motor Corporation, has launched the Wagon R FFV, the first mass-produced flex-fuel passenger vehicle in India. The unveiling marks a milestone not only for Suzuki but also for the Indian automotive industry, which is embracing cleaner and more diverse fuel technologies.
The launch ceremony was held in New Delhi and attended by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari and Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri, underscoring the government’s support for alternative fuel solutions.
Flex-fuel vehicles (FFVs) are capable of running on varying blends of ethanol and petrol, offering greater fuel flexibility while reducing dependence on conventional fossil fuels. Environmental experts highlight that higher ethanol blends can help lower particulate matter (PM) emissions, contributing to improved air quality in urban areas.
The introduction of the Wagon R FFV aligns with India’s broader strategy to promote ethanol-based fuels and reduce carbon emissions from the transport sector. By enabling the use of renewable biofuels, flex-fuel technology supports both environmental goals and energy security objectives.
Suzuki stated that the launch reflects its commitment to providing a range of environmentally friendly mobility solutions tailored to regional needs. Alongside flex-fuel technology, the company continues to invest in hybrid vehicles, battery electric vehicles (BEVs), and compressed natural gas/compressed biogas (CNG/CBG) models.
“Mass production of flex-fuel vehicles represents a new chapter in India’s automotive landscape,” the company said, emphasizing its focus on developing diverse technologies that respond to varying energy conditions and customer preferences across global markets.
The Wagon R FFV is expected to play a key role in advancing India’s transition toward cleaner transportation while offering consumers a practical and affordable alternative-fuel vehicle.
With the launch, Suzuki reinforces its position as a leader in sustainable mobility innovation and signals growing momentum for ethanol-powered transportation in one of the world’s largest automotive markets.
