Hyundai Doubles Down on China with IONIQ V Debut and Ambitious EV Expansion Plan

Hyundai Motor Company has reaffirmed its long-term commitment to China by unveiling the all-new IONIQ V at Auto China 2026, marking a major step in its renewed strategy for the world’s largest electric vehicle (EV) market.

The company introduced its “In China, For China, To Global” approach, positioning China not only as a key sales market but also as a global hub for EV innovation and development. As part of this strategy, Hyundai plans to launch 20 new models in China over the next five years, spanning battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs).

A cornerstone of this push is the IONIQ V, the first production model under Hyundai’s IONIQ brand specifically tailored for Chinese consumers. Built on localized innovation and global engineering expertise, the vehicle offers a driving range exceeding 600 km (CLTC standard) and focuses on space, connectivity, and intelligent features—key demands in the Chinese EV market.

Hyundai has also committed significant investment to strengthen its joint venture with BAIC Group. Together, the companies will invest 8 billion yuan into Beijing Hyundai, reinforcing product development and long-term competitiveness.

The IONIQ V showcases a premium design and advanced in-car experience, featuring a 27-inch panoramic display, head-up display, and AI-powered voice assistant supported by a Qualcomm chipset. Safety remains a priority, with a reinforced structure, multiple airbags, and advanced driver assistance systems developed in collaboration with local tech firm Momenta.

Hyundai aims to achieve annual sales of 500,000 units in China through this aggressive product rollout and localization strategy. The company is also revamping its customer experience by introducing transparent pricing, enhanced service networks, and dedicated EV retail spaces.
