India’s two-wheeler market recorded robust growth in March 2026, with total registrations reaching 1.95 million units, marking a 28.21% year-on-year increase and a 13.90% rise compared to February 2026, according to JATO Dynamics.

The strong performance highlights sustained demand across segments, driven by both replacement buying and increased usage needs, particularly in commuter categories. Industry experts note that the continued expansion reflects the underlying strength and resilience of India’s mobility landscape.

Motorcycles remained the backbone of the two-wheeler market, especially in rural and semi-urban areas where they serve as a primary mode of daily transportation and livelihood support. Their affordability, durability, and practicality continue to make them the preferred choice for a large section of consumers. This segment is expected to maintain its dominant share in overall industry volumes.

At the same time, scooters and electric scooters are steadily gaining traction, particularly in urban areas. Changing mobility patterns, ease of use, and rising fuel costs are encouraging city commuters to shift towards scooters. The growing acceptance of electric mobility is further accelerating this trend, supported by improving charging infrastructure and lower total cost of ownership.

Another key development shaping the market is the increasing contribution from tier-2 and tier-3 cities. These regions are emerging as major growth drivers, reducing the industry’s traditional reliance on metro markets. Improved connectivity, rising income levels, and growing aspirations are fueling demand in these areas, creating a broader and more diversified customer base.

Across the dealer network, inventory management has remained stable, contributing to better sales predictability and reducing operational risks. This balance between supply and demand is helping maintain a healthy retail environment for manufacturers and dealers alike.

Ravi Bhatia, President of JATO Dynamics India, emphasized that the market has entered 2026 with strong momentum. He noted that while motorcycles will continue to anchor the industry, evolving consumer preferences toward scooters and electric vehicles signal a structural shift in the market.

With stable supply conditions and widespread regional demand, the outlook for India’s two-wheeler industry remains positive for the coming months, indicating sustained growth and transformation across segments.
