In a significant move to boost electric mobility, the Government of India has notified the setting up of Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (EVCS) as an unlicensed activity, allowing private entities to install charging stations in accordance with the Ministry of Power (MoP) guidelines dated 17 September 2024.
The government has also taken proactive measures to strengthen public EV charging infrastructure nationwide, allocating Rs. 912.50 crore under the FAME-II scheme and Rs. 2,000 crore under the PM E-DRIVE scheme. These funds aim to ensure adequate deployment of public charging stations across India, including Tier-2 cities and rural areas, supporting the growth of electric mobility.
According to Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), India currently has 29,151 public EV charging stations installed. Both the FAME-II and PM E-DRIVE schemes are being implemented on a pan-India basis to accelerate the development of the EV ecosystem.
Under FAME-II, Rs. 633.44 crore of the allocated Rs. 912.50 crore has already been expended for public charging infrastructure deployment. Meanwhile, under the PM E-DRIVE scheme, the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) issued operational guidelines on 26 September 2025 for the deployment of public EV charging stations, providing a framework for project implementation and participation by eligible public and private entities.
These initiatives underline the government’s commitment to expand EV charging infrastructure and promote the adoption of electric vehicles across the country.
